Day Trips from Positano
The best excursions and trips you can do in a day
Full-Day Trips
Worth dedicating a whole day to explore.
Capri
150Capri is the classic day trip, a glamorous antidote to the mainland. Ferry to Marina Grande, then ride the funicular up to the chic Piazzetta. The Blue Grotto grabs headlines. Yet the quieter Gardens of Augustus serve serene views over the Faraglioni rocks. See and be seen along elegant shopping lanes, then let coastal paths lead you to quieter corners.
Pompeii
80Pompeii freezes Roman life under your feet. Walk stone streets past temples, theaters, and homes where mosaics still gleam. The scale is vast. Focus on the Forum, the Villa of the Mysteries with its frescoes, or the ancient bakeries. Touchable history beats any textbook.
Amalfi and Ravello
40Amalfi and Ravello deliver two coast flavors in one swing. Amalfi, the historic maritime republic, centers on its striped cathedral and lively piazza. A winding bus climbs to Ravello, a hilltop retreat of sublime gardens and refined calm. The jump from busy sea level to panoramic quiet is the real hook.
Path of the Gods (Sentiero degli Dei)
15The Path of the Gods is the Amalfi Coast's most famous walk. Heart-stopping views drop from mountainside to sea, with Positano tiny below. The classic route runs from Bomerano to Nocelle, mostly downhill. Old mule paths, terraced hillsides, and scrub frame the coast like a map. Sweat earns the vista.
Paestum
100Paestum's three Greek temples rise from an open field, huge and almost intact. They predate Roman sway and rank among the best-preserved Greek structures anywhere. The adjacent museum shows tomb frescoes and artifacts that spell out the ancient city. The plain setting makes their scale and age hit even harder.
Ischia
120Ischia trades Capri's fame for thermal springs, a castle on a rock, and lush gardens. The island feels local, relaxed, and bigger than you expect. Hop between Ischia Porto and Forio, climb the Aragonese Castle, or soak in thermal parks where hot seawater fills the pools.
Private Amalfi Coast Boat Tour
700Seeing the coast from the water flips the view. A private boat slips into coves and beaches no road can reach. Swim in clear water, then gaze up at vertical villages from their most photographic angle. Customize the route: Amalfi, the Fjord of Furore, lunch at a Conca dei Marini trattoria.
Half-Day Options
Shorter excursions when time is limited.
Agerola (Bomerano) and Fior di Latte Tasting
20Agerola sits high in the Lattari Mountains, cool and green. This is the Path of the Gods trailhead. But you can also just enjoy the air and visit a dairy. Farms hand you fresh *fior di latte* mozzarella and other cheeses, a world away from coastal bustle.
Praiano
10Praiano, the quieter neighbor of Positano, sits just a short hop down the coast. It's a residential town that clings to the cliffs. The church of San Gennaro, with its distinctive majolica-tiled dome, is the main draw. Walk the path down to Marina di Praia, a small beach tucked into a rocky inlet that feels hidden away. Worth it.
Ravioli & Tagliatelle Cooking Class
180Spend a half-day in a Positano home learning pasta traditions. You'll shape ravioli filled with ricotta and slice tagliatelle using family-passed techniques. It's hands-on. You eat the results, sip local wine, and swap stories with your host.
Montepertuso
5Montepertuso, a small village perched high above Positano, is technically part of the town but feels like another world. Ride the local internal bus up the steep, winding road. The attraction is the 'Montepertuso' itself, a large limestone rock with a hole through its center. Hiking paths surround it and give a downward view over Positano's rooftops and the coast.
Day Trip Tips
Make the most of your excursions.
- ✓ Check ferry and bus schedules the day before your trip. Services can be reduced outside peak summer months and timetables change.
- ✓ For bus travel along the Amalfi Coast road, consider motion sickness medication if you're prone to it. The roads are very winding.
- ✓ Start your day trips as early as possible. This helps you avoid the worst of the traffic on the coast road and the largest crowds at major sites like Pompeii or Capri.
- ✓ For popular boat tours or cooking classes, booking a few days in advance is wise, from June through September.
- ✓ Wear comfortable, sturdy shoes even for town visits. Positano and its neighboring towns are built on steep slopes with many stairs.
- ✓ Carry both cash and card. Smaller buses, some ferry ticket offices, and family-run shops in smaller villages might only accept cash.
- ✓ If renting a car for a day trip, be aware that driving the Amalfi Coast road requires confidence. Parking in towns like Amalfi is difficult and expensive. ZTL (limited traffic zone) restrictions also apply in many historic centers.
- ✓ Pack a light layer. The weather can be different inland or on the water. The mountains around Agerola are notably cooler than the Positano coastline.
